SSG will set up another spring camp in Virovichy, Florida, the U.S.A. This year. The team will depart Korea on Wednesday. Six veterans will be excluded from the upcoming camp list, including Choi Jeong, Kim Sung-hyun, Han Yu-sum, Oh Tae-gon (fielders), Lee Ji-young and Kim Min-sik (catcher). They will have separate spring camp in Kagoshima, Japan, away from the main camp.먹튀검증
Since his inauguration in November 2023, Lee has been emphasizing "autonomy and responsibility." Veteran players who had established their own routines during last year's spring camp also made certain parts of the training program themselves. Ahead of this year's camp, the veteran players were given the option to decide the camp site. Six of them said they would prepare for the new season in Japan, not the U.S.
Virovich's Jackie Robinson training complex, which SSG has used as its first spring camp site for a long time, is a suitable place for training both in facilities and weather except for the long travel time. However, some players feel this disadvantage even more because it takes about 20 hours to travel due to lack of direct flights. For this reason, six players including Choi Jeong chose Japan, which is free from travel time difference.
There are some cases where some players cannot accompany them to the camp due to individual circumstances. However, it is rare for the camp to be divided into two due to players' voluntary choice. Some fans of SSG are concerned that the team work could be negatively affected. All pitchers including "captain" Kim Kwang-hyun will head to the U.S., but the fact that Lee Ji-young and Kim Min-sik, the first and second option catchers, held separate camps in Japan last year is also worrisome.
First of all, it is not simple why this year's first camp was divided into two. SSG has been undergoing a gradual generational change since last season. After the end of the season, it held a high-intensity "promoter camp" in Kagoshima as part of its final training exercise. The team tried to bring as many young players as possible to the first camp in Florida.
In order to take more promising players to the camp, the existing personnel had to leave. This is one of the reasons why they gave veteran players a choice. It can be said that the interests of the club, which tried to take more young players, and the veteran players, who struggled with long movement and time difference, are in harmony. As for the catcher, as Lee Ji-young and Kim Min-sik were excluded, three players including Shin Bum-soo, Cho Hyung-woo and Lee Yul-ye will be allowed to participate in the first-tier camp. Fostering catchers is the core goal of this camp, and SSG plans to foster catchers who can play half of the 2025 season with Lee Ji-young.
A club official said, "I gave them autonomy, believing that they are players who build their bodies and train on their own," adding, "We will train together from the second camp in Okinawa, Japan."
Whatever the intention, it is true that the time spent together as a whole has been shortened until the opening. The only way is to prove during the season that the choice to divide the camp is not wrong. Autonomy always comes with responsibility.
